Wakizashi in Shirasaya, with Koshirae (NBTHK Hozon Paper)

This Mumei (Gassan) belongs to Jyo saku ranking.
The blade was polished.
Blade length : 43.8 cm or 17.24 inches.
Sori : 1.2 cm or 0.47 inches.
Mekugi : 1
Width at the hamachi : 2.80 cm or 1.10 inches.
Width at the Kissaki : 1.95 cm or 0.76 inches.
Kasane : 0.61 cm or 0.24 inches.
Era : Middle Muromachi period.
Shape : The blade is regular size with sori and longer kissaki
Jitetsu : Ayasugi had well grained with jinie attach and visible to see the texture.
Hamon : Niedeki suguha with Uchinoke and sunagashi work in Ha.
Boshi is round shape hakikake style.
Special feature : Gassan is the name of one of a holy mountain in present Yamagata pref.
Where had been prospered gathering ascetics, merchants and swordsmiths from ancient times.
Swordsmiths lived at the base of Mt.
Gassan formed a school and forged swords with peculiar texture of jitetsu called Ayasugi-hada around the Kamakura period.
On and after the middle Muromachi period, swordsmiths started to inscribe their individual swordsmith name on the sword tang.
The school once declined in the Edo period.
Gassan Sadayoshi moved to Osaka and revived the tradition in the last Edo period.
It has succeeded continuously until today. This blade is nice Ayasugi had well grained.
Gassan school was influenced a lot to other sword makers like Hojyu,
and Kyusyu Ko Naminohira school even though these district far away.
Koshirae :
Tsuba : On the thick iron Tsunba battling samurai and matsu tree are engraved.
Saya : Black roar saya.
Fuchi : On the syakudo plain plate, a foresee and a man are kasherengraved with gold color.
Kashira : On the syakudo nanako plate, sea water sea shells are engraved with gold color.
Menuki : Shishi dog is engraved by syakudo plate.
