Katana in Shirasaya with Koshirae (NBTHK Hozon paper)
Signature : Mumei (unsigned) attributed as Gassan Hiroyasu
(We divide 4 sections for each sword as Saijo saku, Jojo saku Jo saku and regular saku)
This sword belongs to Jojo saku ranking.
The blade was polished.
Habaki : Copper single Habaki.
Blade length : 72,2 cm or 28.4 inches.
Sori : 2,1cm or 0,83 inches.
Mekugi : 1
Width at the hamachi : 3,29 cm or 1.3 inches.
Width at the Kissaki : 2,74 cm or 1.8 inches.
Kasane : 0,93 cm or 0.37 inches.
Era : Late Muromachi period. Eiroku era. (1558~1570)
Shape : The blade is Nagamaki-naoshi style long and wide and thick blade with deep curve very nice looking shape.
Jigane : Ayasugi-hada well grained and Shirake Utsuri appear on Ji.
Hamon : Suguha-hamon with Koashi scatter and double Ha.
Kissaki is Hakikake style.
Special feature : Gassan Hiroyasu is a swordsmith of Dewa province and succeeded from old Gassan school.
This sword has typical Ayasugi-hada which is well known as original Gassan texture.
But unfortunately Gassan school disappeared after the Muromachi period at once.
After the long time has passed, Gassan Sadakazu, the ancestor of old Gassan school researched about the old forging technique for a long long time and finally succeeded to recover Ayasugi-hada at later Edo period.
This Gassan sword forging thechnique is still kept as the TOP secret, never allowed to be taken out or notice to anyone else but Gassan family now.
This sword has wonderful Ayasugi Hada with Utsuri and also nice Hamon of old Ko-Gassan school.
Koshirae :
Saya : Black Roiro saya Inro-kizami style.
Tsuba : Landscape is carved on Mokko shape iron Tsuba.
Menuki : Paulownia family crest, whitch is official seal of Japan is carved.
Fuchikashira: Paulownia family crest is carved.
