Habaki: Gold double foiled habaki
The blade was polished.
Blade length : 75.4cm or 29.69inches.
Sori : 1.4cm or 0.55inches.
Mekugi: 3
Width at the hamachi : 3.1cm or 1.22inches.
Width at the Kissaki : 2.44cm or 0.96inches.
Kasane : 0.7cm or 0.27inches.
Weight of only blade:890g
Era :Late Kamakura period to early Nanbokucho period
Shape : It is wide and thick oosuriage mumei katana with slight curve.
It is magnificent looking katana.
Jitetsu :Koitame hada well grained with jinie attached.
There is clear utsuri seen. There are fine flows of masa.
Hamon : Konie base suguha with koashi seen in the ha.
Boshi is round end.
Special feature :Komihara is the sword smith school that was active
at Bingo from late Kamakura period to Nanbokucho period.
Masaie and Masahiro are especially famous in this school.
The characteristics of this school is that jigane is soft and there are faint utsuri seen.
There are even swords that reminds of Aoe school which was from the neighbor province.
This katana reminds of Aoe school where there jigane is shukumen(crepe like texture).
The jigane in the shinogiji has also the characteristic of itame hada with mixture
of mokume unique in Koto. During the Muromachi period,
there are only signature with the name of Mihara. The jigane then becomes masa base.
The solder monks has made the swords and the hamon of those are all suguha.
This piece is in strikingly good condition.
Historical background: Year 1331 Battle of Genkou.
The battle has occurred by the lead of Emperor Godaigo to forcefully pull down
the Kamakura Shogunate. It includes every battle that was involved
in the fall of the Kamakura Shogunate.
