Signature: Sadatoshi(Ayakouji school)
The blade was polished.
Habaki: solid gold and gold foiled.
Blade length : 25.4 cm or 10 inches.
Sori : 0 cm or0 inches.
Mekugi: 2
Width at the hamachi : 2.12 cm or 0.83 inches.
Kasane : 0.32 cm or 0.125 inches.
Era : Middle Kamakura period. around Bunei era.
Shape : Kasane is thin. Mitsu mume Tanto. It looks like Sanjo or Awataguchi style.
Ken and Koubashi (chopsticks for incense) are engraved.
Jitetsu : Ko-Itamehada well grained with Jinie attach. This Jigane is beautiful.
Hamon : Hoso-Suguha and Ko-Gunome, Ko- Choji mixed. There are Ko-nie and Kinsuji.
Special feature : Generally, it is very rare to see tanto existing that is older than middle
Kamakura period .Sadatoshi tanto was said that it does not exist any more.
After the war, it is said that there were two pieces. One is not found so the other that actually
only one existing is this one tanto of Sadatoshi. On the record, it is written that the former pieces
that he made were only Tachis.
Sadatoshi tanto has never been seen by the researcher therefor it is not studies at all.
When the other lost sword appears, the it could be studied deeply by comparing the two.
The 750 years old blade that was repeatedly polished, which has a distinctive characteristic
and elegance. It is just thankful for the sword being existing and we hold the sword to pray to
survive in the future. As one sword lover, I feel more blessed than one deserves.
Kunzan also wrote the sword as "rare" on the sayagaki.
There is a description and oshigata of Kunzan sensei at his book "Kantou
Nichi NIchi Sho Zokusan".
