Tenpo 2 nen 8 gatsu Hi (August 1831)
(We divide 4 sections for each sword as Saijyo saku, Jyojyo saku
Jyo saku and regular saku)
This Jiro Fujiwara Naokatsu belongs to Jyojyo saku ranking.
The blade was polished.
Blade length : 47.0 cm or 18.50 inches.
Sori : 1.0 cm or 0.39 inches.
Mekugi : 1
Width at the hamachi : 2.87 cm or 1.12 inches.
Width at the Kissaki : 2.03 cm or 0.79 inches.
Kasane : 0.64 cm or 0.25 inches.
Era :Edo period. around Tenpo era (1831)
Shape : It is wide and thick with deep sori. It is long kissaki
and there is Hi and Soe-Hi(groove that is running by the main Hi) on the back side.
Jitetsu :Koitame hada well grained with jinie attached. It is clear jigane.
Hamon : Nioi deki with deep nioiguhi. It is choji midare with kinsuji work .
Boshi is sharp turnback and midare komi style.
Special feature : Jiro Fujiwara Naokatsu has been serving under Akimoto family
of Jyoshu Tatebayashi(Now Gunma prefecture).
After he moved to Edo, he becomes the student and adopted son of of Taikei Naotane.
It was during Tenpo 2nd year when he started to call himself JIro Naokatsu
and signed signature JIro Taro Naokatsu.
He has used several different signature such as Sojiro Taro Fujiwara Naokatsu Zo,
Soshi Jiro Taro Naokatsu and Jiro Fuji Naokatsu. Ansei 5th year July 22nd,
he passed away at the age of 54.
The style of his works is similar to his teacher Naotane who made Bizen den
and Soshu den work and some of them were even better than his.
This wakizashi is a work that is influenced by early Muromachi period Morimitsu.
It is nie deki with deep nioiguchi. It is excellent choji midare
with deep kinsuji work is entwined in the hamon.
The undulating hamon is beyond the work of Naotane
Historical background: Tenpo 2nd year 1831 February 18th,
the Russian ship has invaded Ezo. Tenpo 3rd year August 19th He has Nezumi Kozo
(The theif during Edo Period who has robbed a mansion) was executed in Kozukahara.
